Plan Changes, August 2002

Allyson and Robb were trying to figure out how to build the staircase, so they suggested this option which will have more wall on both sides of the treads than in previous drawings. This first drawing is to put the next two cross sections in prespective. Now we are moving more of the mass of the Trombe wall to the outside of the stairs, against the windows.

This is Section A, east-west through the middle of the stairs, showing the construction of the exterior wall and windows. The treads will now be a pre-cast concrete and we are planning some wood risers to go between them (we do not want open space there). This sketch was drawn with a curvy top the the wouthern wall, which we really like because it reminds us of the Virginia range's smooth lines. Also shown here is the "ceiling" over the water feature that we are planning for the entry space. This will have a couple of canister lights and provide some definintion to the space.

Section B looks north-south through the middle of the staircase. The key here is that we will have the treads attached by the steel angles at each side of the step. The concrete wall still comes up to provide the "railing" for the hall way above the staircase and also will provide the passive heat for part of the upstairs.

Getting closer.. we really like these little changes...
